Recenter before the Rush: A Back to school Reset for Moms

As the school year approaches, I often feel like I’m getting swept into a windstorm—forms to fill, lunches to plan, and schedules to juggle. I have had more conversations with my mom clients in the past several weeks about the overwhelming feelings we encounter as school approaches. It has challenged me to consider ways to counter this by choosing a rhythm of recentering.

I’m inviting you to join me in this simple rhythm: Reset. Revisit & Revamp. Release.

1. Reset: Begin from a place of peace before diving into the back-to-school chaos. The reset principle is grounded in rest, reflection, and intentional structure. You can choose a date for your reset—it does not have to be now—but you are planning for the grounding principles you need to be successful as the new school year starts.

For me, that means returning to a practice I’ve missed: sacred Monday mornings. Time with God before anything else. Maybe for you, it’s a quiet walk, a prayer journal, or simply 15 minutes of stillness.

Don’t underestimate the power of a pause. Resetting invites clarity and calm before and during the new rhythm.

2. Revisit & Revamp: I’m reflecting on what worked well from the past school year and revamping for this new season.

  • Meal planning kept our evenings smoother.

  • Time-blocking helped me stay present—work during work time, family during family time.

  • Sabbath rest reminded me to protect my energy.

But I’m also giving myself permission to revamp. I'm not the same person I was last August, and adjustments will be needed. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about creating systems that honor the needs of my family now.

3. Release: Surrender the Outcome
The final (and hardest) part: letting go.

I can plan all I want—but ultimately, I need to release control and trust God with this reset. I’m choosing to be present instead of preoccupied. That means intentional time with Him, myself, and my husband (who tends to not get any time these days, sadly) to fuel the time with my children. In order to engage in their interests, shower them with attention, love, and prayers, the release of trusting this reset to Him has to occur first.

Part of my release is being present with my kids through intentional one-on-one time with each child:

  • A creative date with my youngest before school starts. He is the artist of the family.

  • A basketball one-on-one game with my older son to connect. This is all he cares about right now... SPORTS—not my fave, but my goal is to connect.

Choose Your Day.
My reset day is August 18—right after my birthday. Pick yours. Mark it. Make space to reset, revisit, revamp, and release.

Because when we start from a place of peace, we parent from a place of presence.
